For the first time an exhibition is hosted in Linz that explicitly focalizes Iranian contemporary art. Therefore, the institution Salzamt has invited 4 Iranian-born artists - who either live and work in- or outside the country - in order to work site-specifically in the city of Linz. Away from media-hyped stigmatizations and negative headlines that significantly shape our notion of Iran, the exhibition provides intimate and valuable insights into current discourses. The emerging art works in various media recount individual narrations and imply processual narrative structures with different visions. Applying subtle metaphorical and pictorial languages or using rather immediate imageries, the artists capture personal and socio-critical subjects and work up impressions collected in Linz. An interesting issue is the juxtaposition of the works produced in situ with those created in former times in another place and cultural context. By this means, the state of 'in between' different layers of time, place and culture is emphasized and obsolete classifications of ethnicity and nationality can again be deconstructed. Following the intention to subvert several cliches and stereotypes regarding Iran, the exhibition may encourage visitors to further contestations.
