Born in 1978 Behnaz Jalali grew up under the influence of her grandfather, an outstanding calligrapher. She soon became deeply involved in painting and calligraphy and went on to study art in her university years. In 2009 she graduated with a master’s degree from the Azad University of Fine Arts. Behnaz Jalali is a standing member of the Painters’ Association and an honorary member of the Visual Art Development Institute.
Since 2000 she has participated in 5 solo and over 22 group exhibitions. According to Mohammad Ebrahim Jafari, one of Iran’s outstanding contemporary painters and her teacher, “When I first saw Ms. Jalali she was 22 years old. She had turned from sketching and painting still life to photographing snow, rain, mountains, deserts and, ultimately, her grandfather’s calligraphy.
This last, together with the way in which the calligraphers of the time attacked the canvas and my poetic musings, helped advance young painters of the day... toward a certain release. At first she was drawn into the web of her own illusions but finally, as she herself admits, she has found a relative satisfaction in her work... I believe that Behnaz Jalali has an ear familiar to the sounds of the world of music and an eye sensitive to harmony in the world of painting...” Behnaz Jalali is presently living and working in Tehran.
