Ritual of Hope

By Roya Monajem, Tehran

Modern Times heralded by Twilight of the Idols
Seems to be the era of increased freedom of choice
Compared to before...
When sons had to follow the fathers
And daughters to fulfill dictated roles
All determined and laid down by dominant rules and regulations..
Putting it more poetically
Rituals, rites, customs, ceremonies.

Beginning with the Japanese Tsunami ,
Uprisings, rebels, wars in Arab countries
Continued human losses and demolitions in Afghanistan, Iraq
Economic World Crisis... hitting mostly the Greeks...
Increased international pressure on Iran and the constant hovering of the ghost of war in the blue skies...

Huh!...

What a nightmarish year it was for a good part of the world,
Wasn't it?

So much so that surviving to see this year's fire burning ceremony of Chaharshanbeh Suri
Seemed so unlikely, impossible...
As we ironically reminded each other...

The anniversary of the revolution and its ceremonies arrived and left ...
Under the same heavy air... as though being chocked by one of these recent storms of sands coming from the Peninsula... Ancient Mesopotamia was it called before? ...

Struggling hard to find hope especially on the day of the collective silence...
This year seemingly held since morning twilight at homes...

Walking around the streets of the capital on the same evening twilight...
Wondering?

Suddenly...
Noticed!

My goodness, Unbelievable..

People are already preparing for Norouz, already?
Beginning more or less five weeks before the New Year?
How?
Are they scared of soaring prices? The threat of war or...
Is it a way to fill
The emptiness of hope?

Maybe that is the secret of how to find it?

Maybe after all
The Grandfathers and Grandmothers of Time
Knew what they were leaving for the posterity

Maybe the missing yarn of Hope
Lies in the basket of the herald of the coming new year..
Wow! Such a good rope it can be for pulling oneself out of heavy dark times...despairs and depressions...
For all its festive demands...
From house-cleaning to other accompanying rites and rituals
As when preparing for a Joyous Festival...
No matter in what part of the world...
Maybe that's how Japanese survived last year...
And all the rest of us...
To see the coming cherry blossoms once again?

Stop...
Time to Celebrate...

It is New Year, season of flowers with friends waiting
Barmaid see the Moon on the beloved's face and bring the wine...

Happy Spring Equinox...

The title of one of Nietzsche's books

The verse is by ever-lasting Hafez. Among Iranians when the crescent moon is seen in the sky, heralding the beginning of a new month, by extension a new year, a new period, it is recommended to close eyes, make a wish and open them looking at something beautiful around, if not beloved, at least water, greeneries, flowers... the blessings of life...
