In June 2011, Malekzadeh was arrested on corruption charges.
Before his arrest, Malekzadeh was appointed as deputy foreign minister for administrative and financial affairs, a move which provoked a storm of criticism from a number of lawmakers.
Ayatollah Khamenei said last week that fighting economic corruption is necessary for boosting domestic production. "Smuggling and abusing the nation's financial assets and resources in banks are instances of the economic disruptions," he said.
