Iranian researchers produce non-carcinogenic radiation drug

Source: ISNA

Iranian researchers at Nuclear Engineering and Physics Department, Amirkabir University in Tehran, have succeeded to gain the know-how for producing non-carcinogenic radiation drug "neodymium 140." The drug would be useful in treating some cancerous tissues as well as PET imaging system.

The performance of the radiation drug is irradiation inside the tissues, the intensity of which is lower in comparison with common radiation drug "Iodine 125."

Lower irradiation intensity would not destroy healthy tissues around the cancerous ones.

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy, sometimes abbreviated to XRT or DXT, is the medical use of ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells.

Radiation therapy may be curative in a number of types of cancer, if they are localized to one area of the body.

It may also be used as part of a therapy to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery to remove a primary malignant tumor.
