Mohsen Rezai, the secretary of the Expediency Council of Iran, warned that social and economic dissatisfaction are on a sharp rise in the country.

ILNA reports that at the launch of the book Economic Federalism, Rezai said: "The fact is that sense of social and economic dissatisfaction is rising amongst the people rapidly."

The former Revolutionary Guards chief added, however: "The question is that while the Iranian nation has managed to surpass obstacles such as tyranny, invasions and war, it has not been able to make a leap beyond these barriers."

Rezai went on to make a case for economic federalism, saying Iran can make an economic leap forward by allowing the various regions to act more independently in their economic development.

"Some are still wary of valuing the various ethnicities and fear giving executive powers to provinces and cities, but our country, before the era of Reza Shah, was managed federally, and Iranians already have such an experience," Rezai maintained.
