The exhibition Ciphers: Tension with Tradition in Contemporary Iranian Photography takes us to a place that many Canadians have experienced only through news media.
Galerie SAW Gallery
67 Nicholas Street Ottawa, ON K1N 7B9, Canada
Aiming to present diverse perspectives on contemporary issues and culture in Iran, invited curator Andrea Fitzpatrick has brought together nine emerging and established Iranian photographers and video artists, based in Tehran, Lyon and Ottawa, whose works are both anchored in tradition and visually innovative.
With Iranian history dating back millennia, tradition is a motif that remains present in almost every aspect of daily life in Iran. The pull between the ancient and the novel, the handcrafted and the computer-manipulated, and the spiritual and the mundane are some of the tensions represented in the works spotlighted in the exhibition.
Over recent years, the artists in the exhibition have helped create a vibrant art scene in Tehran and have attracted international critical acclaim, despite difficulties posed by issues around international diplomacy and economic sanctions, yet their work has rarely been exhibited in Canada. Galerie SAW Gallery is delighted to introduce audiences in the region to the groundbreaking work of some the most exciting Iranian artists of today.
The exhibition runs from 26 April to 9 June 2012.
