Iran left stunned by Thailand in the semi-final round of the AFC Futsal Championship 2012 in Dubai, the UAE on Wednesday.
The 10-time continental champion, who defeated South Korea (14-1), Qatar (8-0), Australia (9-0) and Uzbekistan (6-3), lost to Thailand 5-4 in the added time at the Al Wasl Stadium.
Iran captain Vahid Shamsaee scored after four minutes into the match and Hossein Tayebi made it 2-0 three minutes later.
Thueanklan Suphawut reduced the deficit for Thailand in the 10th minute.
Javad Asghari Moghaddam scored Iran's third goal in the 30th minute but Suphawut pulled a goal back shortly after from the penalty spot.
Two minutes later, Jirawat Sornwichian equalized the match and two teams went to extra time.
In the 43rd minute, Apiwat Chaemcharoen put Thailand in the lead. The Iranian team possessed the ball and put Thailand under pressure. The dominant Persians finally equalized the match in the 48th minute but with 25 seconds remaining, Thueanklan Suphawut scored the winning goal.
It's the second time that Iran cannot advance to final in the past 12 editions.
"Our players underestimated Thailand. They wanted to beat them with six or seven goals. I had told them there is nothing for granted. We have to learn from the defeat," Iran futsal coach Ali Sanei said.
