Ali Kamrani, the father of one of the detainees who were killed under torture at Kahrizak Prison, told the Mehr News Agency on Wednesday: "Heydarifar, Mortazavi's deputy and another suspect in the Kahrizak case, was recently arrested, and the court has promised to issue an indictment against Saeed Mortazavi by the end of next month."

Kamrani reported that the suit was originally filed in the judges' court, then transferred to the court for public employees and now is finally being processed in the general court.

Kamrani maintained that once Mortazavi is indicted, the case will be forwarded to the Tehran Penal Court.

Mortazavi, a notorious prosecutor, was removed from his post after news leaked out about the torture and murder of detainees at Kahrizak Prison. A parliamentary probe reported that he had ordered the transfer of a group of 2009 election protesters to Kahrizak, knowing they would be subjected to torture and harsh treatment.

Mortazavi also tried to cover up the deaths by claiming the prisoners had died from contracting meningitis while in prison.

Mortazavi is also accused of delaying the closure of the centre after the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei ordered its shutdown.

He was then charged with "complicity in murder, violating citizen's rights and defaming the Iranian Security Forces."
