Modern Iran the third book in the Culture of Iran Youth series covers life in Iran from the 18th century to the present time. It starts with the Qajar dynasty, their attempt to modernize the country and their contributions to the visual and performing arts in Iran. This is the first book to document modern Iran in a pictorial format for young readers age ten and up. The book provides a comprehensive and easy-to-read look at life in the 19th and 20th centuries in Iran. It follows the modernization processes of the last 150 years and the Constitutional Revolution, the first successful mass protests in the Middle East demanding democratic rights in 1906. It follows the rise of the Pahlavi Dynasty, and changes in cultural and social aspects of life in modern Iran. It touches on the lives of women in Iran, different religious and ethnic group and the Iranians abroad. Major Iranian celebrations, festivals and practices are also mentioned. The book is complemented with a timeline of Iranian history and art, glossary, index with 135 photos documenting life in Iran during the period discussed. The book is published in Canada in October 2012 and is produced by Massoume Price.
About the author:
Massoume Price, a social anthropologist educated in Iran and England has been writing on Iranian culture for many years and her site, www.cultureofiran.com, is used extensively by many educational institutions for information on Iranian culture and history.
She is the author of Iran's Diverse Peoples published by ABC-CLIO in 2005. Patrick Clawson of the Middle East Quarterly has called the book “indispensable” and “must reading for anyone who wants to understand ethnic and religious diversity in Iran.”
