Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, has called on Parliament to end its motion to summon Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the assembly for questioning.

Ayatollah Khamenei spoke out against the move, saying: "Going through with the questioning is what the enemies of the country are after."

The leader of the Islamic Republic, who was speaking to a group of Basij members, stressed that while the motion was a "positive step", pursuing it under the circumstances would only please "the enemy." Therefore, he called on the MPs to stop the motion to question the president.

Ayatollah Khamenei once again justified his advice by saying that such a questioning could be exploited in order to create a volatile political atmosphere in which the so-called enemies of the country could gain advantage.

Iran's leader repeated his call for peace among the branches of the government and unity in government affairs.

The Ahmadinejad administration has been consistently in dispute with the judiciary and Parliament in recent months.

A group of MPs has tried to push through a motion to summon the president for questioning on the economic situation of the country, especially the fall in the value of the national currency and the rising inflation.

Ahmadinejad supporters have also made a concerted effort to stop the motion.

With the order from Ayatollah Khamenei, it is now certain that Ahmadinejad will no longer have to appear in Parliament for questioning, as the Supreme Leader holds the final word in all affairs.
