Earthquake shakes up Shiraz in southern Iran

A severe earthquake rocked Shiraz on Wednesday evening, injuring a number of people near the southern Iranian city.

Shiraz is the sixth most populous city in Iran and the capital of Fars Province. Shiraz is the sixth most populous city of Iran and the capital of Fars Province. In 2009 the population of the city was 1,455,073. Shiraz is located in the southwest of Iran on the Roodkhaneye Khoshk (Dry river) seasonal river. It has a moderate climate and has been a regional trade center for over a thousand years. It is regarded as one of the oldest provinces of ancient Persia.

The earthquake, which occurred at around 8:30 PM, was registered at a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale.

The head of Fars Province emergency operations reported that three people were injured due to falls from stairs, but so far no fatalities have been reported.

The earthquake was followed by a number of aftershocks, but there are no official details of the resulting damages.

Iran is still dealing with the effects of the deadly earthquake that rocked northwestern Iran in August, killing more than 300 people and injuring more than 5,000.
