A sculptor and expert on bronze statues has said that the Italian artist Marino Marini's "Horse and Rider", which is located in the Sculpture Garden of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA), is under threat because of a casting defect.

"The sculpture has been suffering from this casting defect from the beginning. Holes can be seen in some parts such as the feet of the rider. It seems its buyers had not seen the problem," Hamid Shans told the Persian service of the Fars News Agency on Saturday.

The museum built up a collection of over 300 works by famous artists, including Edouard Manet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol before the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Shans said that the statue should carefully be examined by experts in order find solution for the problem.

He also said that the artwork has been washed by chlorinate water over the years. The chlorinate water incrusts a layer of scurf, which then corrodes the copper and bronze.

"Ordinary visitors would not notice the problem," Shans stated.

Marini is particularly famous for his series of stylized equestrian statues, which feature a man with outstretched arms on a horse.

He created TMCA's "Horse and Rider" in 1953.

Bronze statues by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti are also set up in the TMCA Sculpture Garden.
