The Iranian national basketball team went to the semifinal of the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup after it imposed a heavy defeat on Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals.
Iran's national basketball squad beat Uzbekistan 79-37 on Thursday and made it to the semifinal of the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup. The win in the quarterfinals made Iran the first team to go to the semifinal of the games, news sources reported.
In the semifinal, Iran will play against the winner of another quarterfinal match between Taiwan and the Philippines.
Also on Thursday, Qatar will line up against Lebanon, and China will face the host Japan.
A Group B team, Iran left behind India, Qatar, Taiwan and Japan 83-71, 85-75, 71-63, and 71-65 respectively in the preliminary round.
2012 FIBA Asia Cup which is the 4th FIBA Asia Cup, the basketball tournament of FIBA Asia is being held at the Ota Gymnasium, in Ota, Tokyo, Japan from September 14-22, 2012.
The winner of this year's FIBA Asia Cup automatically qualifies for the FIBA Asia Championship in 2013.
According to the FIBA Asia rules, each zone had one place, and the hosts (Japan) and Asian champion (China) were automatically qualified. The other two places are allocated to the zones according to performance in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.
