The Iranian Student Alliance in America & Berkeley Lecture Series present: Shahin Najafi - A Review of Iran's Music of Protest.
Shahin Najafi has become one of the foremost contemporary Iranian musicians around the globe. His music contains a wide spectrum of lyrics pertaining to political and social issues. His music has made him a highly controversial figure, becoming one of the few individuals in history to be issued a fatwa by Iranian clerics. In Germany, he carries on his music of protest from where he left off in Iran, using pen and music as a reflection of his political and social ideas. And for the very first time to come to the United States, he will share an evening with you, to review Iran's music of protest, at the University of California, Berkeley.

Shahin Najafi will share his political and social ideas and review Iran's music of protest. Through his courageous lyrics, Najafi has become one of the foremost contemporary Iranian musicians around the globe. Because his songs challenge the suppression of human rights, freedom, and democracy, comprising a wide spectrum of political and social issues, he has faced immense persecution from authorities in Iran.
This May, a politically motivated fatwa delivered by radical Iranian clerics issued his death ruling. United for Iran condemned this fatwa in the strongest possible terms and urged the Iranian government to likewise rebuke the clerical ruling and reform its penal code to remove the death penalty for those labeled “apostates.” Take action by urging Iranian authorities to condemn the fatwa.
Currently residing in Germany, Shahin Najafi carries on his music of protest from where he left off in Iran, using pen and music as a powerful outlet for political and social ideas. United for Iran has also joined the movement of activism thorough song, with this year’s release of the compilation, Azadi: Songs of Freedom for Iran, on the anniversary of the June 2009 uprising. Azadi is a free downloadable mixtape album with messages of resistance and inspiration for Iranians continuing to push for democracy and human rights.
