IRNA reported that Ali Akbar Javanfekr, Ahmadinejad's top media adviser, was detained as the Iranian president was delivering a speech at the annual UN General Assembly in New York.
It said Javanfekr was taken to Tehran's Evin prison to serve a six-month sentence on charges of publishing material offensive to Islamic codes and public morality.
The charges stemmed from an article in a state-run magazine under Javanfekr's control that was critical of Iranian women being compelled to wear Islamic head scarves.
Javanfekr is one of several Ahmadinejad aides targeted by religious hard-line rivals last year who accused the president of being in the grip of a "deviant current" of advisers.
