Iranian, Beninese presidents meet in Porto-Novo

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Beninese counterpart Thomas Yayi Boni started their official talks in Beninˈs capital, Porto-Novo, late Sunday.

Earlier today, the Ahmadinejad and Yayi Bon attended a joint press conference in Porto-Novo.

During the press conference, President Ahmadinejad underlined the expansion of bilateral ties between Iran and Benin.

The two countries can benefit from each otherˈs experiences and facilities,ˈ President Ahmadinejad said.

He expressed the hope that during his visit to Benin, the two countries could reach agreements in the fields of trade, agriculture, metallic industries and exchange of technical and engineering services.

The Beninese president, for his part, said that Iran and Benin advocate peace and friendship among nations, adding that the two countries cooperate with each other on the same basis.

Benin president describes Iran as regional power

Beninese President Thomas Boni Yayi described Iran as a regional power that plays a key role in establishment of peace and stability in different parts of the world.

At a banquet on Sunday held in honor of the visiting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President Yayi appreciated the important role Iran plays in resolving the international problems.

President Ahmadinejad received Benin's highest medal of honor

Iran as the current president of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Benin, as president of the regional committee for Africa, can play influential role in promotion of cooperation among the African states.

Iranian and Beninese presidents also held constructive talks on the latest international developments and bilateral relations as well as African issues.

Iranian President arrived in Benin Sunday evening on the first leg of his three-nation African tour which will later take him to Niger and Ghana. He is to proceed to Niger this afternoon.
