Iraqi security forces have been battling Sunni tribesmen for control over the town of Suleiman Beik.

Reports said the town, some 160 kilometers north of Baghdad, was attacked on April 24 by armed men apparently motivated by revenge for an attack on a Sunni Muslim protest camp the previous day.

Five soldiers and at least seven of the armed attackers were killed and more than 30 people wounded in battles in Suleiman Beik.

The dpa news agency reported the gunmen were in control of the town, but the Reuters news agency reported that army helicopters drove the attackers from Suleiman Beik.

The latest fighting followed clashes on April 23 between troops and protesters in the northern town of Hawija that left at least 23 people dead.

Security forces say they raided the protest camp there because it was infiltrated by gunmen.
