Commander of Iranˈs Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said on Thursday that the Islamic Republic of Iran is the freest country in the world in terms of holding elections.
Since February 2011, Mir Hossein Musavi and Mehdi Karroubi (candidates in June 2009 Presidentail Elections), as well as Musavi's wife, Zahra Rahnavard, have been under house arrest, completely cut off from the outside world.
Iran is among rare countries whose president is elected directly by people, he said.
Elections in Iran are held freely and there is no limits on representation of political parties, he said.
He however crticized the high number of nominees for upcoming presidential election and said this should be revised, he said.
He invited Basiji (voluntary) forces to play an active role in the upcoming presidential elections.
Basij militia also played an active role in the previous election
Basij militia attacking University of Tehran - June 2009.
Basij, a regime supported entity, had the leading role in suppressing the protests after the 2009 presidential elections.
