President of the University of Mashhad Medical Sciences said researchers at the university are building artificial heart for the first time in the country, describing it as a "key achievement" for Iranian scientists.
Researchers at the University of Mashhad Medical Sciences have started producing the device since last year, Mahmoud Shabestari said on Saturday, adding it takes two years to accomplish the system.
He further added that scientists at the university have designed and built several systems over recent years to detect and treat different diseases.
According to Shabestari, the university's researchers are building nine new drugs, mostly used for cancer.
The first anti-cancer drug in Iran and the Middle East was first developed by the researchers of the university and has been mass-produced for markets.
Iranian scientists have taken long strides in different scientific fields, including producing different types of drug such as hi-tech drugs, radio-medicines, knowledge-based drug, and nano-fiber needed for patients after the western states banned their sales to Iran.
