An Iranian privately-owned research center working on tissue engineering and nanotechnology has produced a transgenic goat.
The first transgenic Iranian boat named 'Tarabon' was produced by Bonyakhteh (stem cell) Technology Research Center on April 19 and now is in full health.
The fetus of the goat, produced from the Saanen breed of goats, was transferred last January, Director of the research project Mohammad Salehi told ISNA.
He further added that the process of producing transgenic animals aims at producing required material such as recombinant proteins in their products.
The research center has also started producing recombinant proteins in the goat's milk, which could be used for different functions in industry and medicine.
The research center is after access to functional products for recovery and restructuring of damaged tissues. The research center is the second one after Royan research institute which has mastered cloning technique.
Saanen breed of goats is one of the super breed of goats with much breastfeeding capability, but it is rarely found in Iran.
Bonyakhteh Technology Research Center has bought a pair of goats, but has separated some tissues and added other genes to the tissue cells to clone sells of the animal's ears.
