Mahmoud Vaezi, Iran's new Minister of Communications and Information Technology, announced on Saturday August 17 that the speed and breadth of internet services in the country will be increased.
In an interview with Mehr News Agency, Vaezi said information technology is a source of national development, and one of the main items on his agenda as head of the ministry will be to increase the speed of broadband internet.
Iranian internet users have continuously been restricted by low speed and widespread censorship in recent years, with these restrictions being especially pronounced close to specific events such as elections.

Vaezi acknowledged that in the past four years, the communications ministry has changed hands three times, which has caused serious problems and a lack of continuity he intends to overcome.
Vaezi became minister after Parliament voted 218-45 to approve his appointment, with 20 MPs abstaining.
