Abedini, a journalist and human rights activist, was recently transferred from Tehran's Evin Prison to Karoon Prison in Ahwaz. He has begun a hunger strike to protest the transfer and the refusal of authorities to grant him any furloughs.

Abedini was sentenced to 11 years in jail, which was later increased to 12 by Judge Maghiseh.
