Extremism harmful to national interests: Iranian President

Sources: Press TV

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has described extremism as harmful to the country's national interests, reiterating that his 'foresight and hope' administration does not believe in political partisanship. "I regard extremism as harmful for the country's national interests and even for the Islamic Umma (community) and international security," Rouhani said Monday during a ceremony to introduce new Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli.

The president underlined his administration's intention to bring about "political moderation, economic prudence and social optimism."

Rouhani noted that his administration will guarantee equal rights for all Iranians.

"Iran has a single government and establishment... We have a single Leader and a single Constitution and we are all under this single umbrella... No authority should differentiate between various ethnicities, religions, minorities and followers of different faiths," he stated.

The president called on the new minister of interior to appoint followers of religious minorities as well as women in government posts.

"If we want domestic security, we must give everyone equal opportunity. Women too must have the same opportunity as men. Educated and experienced women must gain higher social opportunities step-by-step," Rouhani said.

He played down political alignment in his administration, saying, "What is significant is commitment to the [Islamic] establishment, expertise, honesty and spirit of sacrifice."
