A member of Iran's regulatory body for nursing has warned of a shortage of nurses in Iranian hospitals, adding that "the decline in the quality of nursing" is compromising the lives of patients.

Mohammad Sharifi Moghaddam told Mehr News Agency: "With a shortage of nurses in healthcare centres, patients are receiving less than fifty percent of the nursing care they require."

He added that a rise in infections in hospitals is another result of the nursing shortfall.

He said the shortage of nurses is overburdening existing nurses with more responsibilities than they can handle, which is turn has pushed down the quality of nursing care.
