The Iranian parliament has approved a bill calling on the government to take legal action against the United States for its role in the 1953 coup in Tehran. The bill, passed on August 27, calls for "political and legal investigation" into the coup that toppled Iran's democratically elected prime minister, Mohammad Mossadegh.

Iranian news agencies said a commission will be created to investigate the case.

The commission will be chaired by Iran's foreign minister.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) declassified documents that admit the agency orchestrated the coup, which restored the regime of then-Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

According to the documents, the coup plan was called Operation TPAJAX.

Iranian lawmakers said the admission by the CIA was sufficient evidence to get compensation from Washington.
