“I live by the philosophy that the energy you project to the universe is the energy you receive right back, so I strive to better my community in as many ways as possible.” Lilygol Sedaghat, a political economy major at the University of California, Berkeley, is a recipient of a 2013 The HAND Foundation scholarship from the Iranian-American Scholarship Fund (IASF). IASF provides scholarships to full-time students of Iranian heritage attending undergraduate and graduate schools in the United States who exhibit academic excellence, as well as financial need and a commitment to community service. The HAND Foundation has been funding a scholarship at IASF since 2012.
Sedaghat is an exemplary recipient who has volunteered countless hours in Costa Rica, China, India, and all throughout California. In Costa Rica, she led her own project working with the national childcare program; in China she taught English and break-dancing to children and adults; in India she worked with prominent non-profit organizations; and in California she worked with underserved communities promoting the importance of higher education.
“I believe that there is good in this world and that to help another person not only means flashing a genuine smile in their direction, but most importantly, building a ladder and constructing a bridge where that one individual can take the steps to better his or her situation.” Sedaghat’s optimism, dedication, and hard work is one of the main reasons she received the scholarship. The scholarship allows Sedaghat time to focus on her studies and not have to worry about juggling work and school, giving her ample time to purse her career goal of becoming the United States Ambassador to China.
You can fund your own scholarship at IASF for as little as $500, see how you can help other deserving students here.
