It's not everyday that we see an Oscar winning film maker at the OMID Center's but on November 6th we were privileged to be joined by the great, and highly entertaining, Ashgar Farhadi as he spoke about his film making, his life and experiences to the young women and staff of both of our Tehran Center's.
During his two hour long visit, Mr. Farhadi first shared with over 100 of our OMID girls, stories of his childhood and his love of films and theater while growing up as well as the challenges he later on faced as a young Iranian man whose dream was to one day become a filmmaker himself.
The second part of the visit was assigned to a question and answer session between the excited young women and Mr. Farhadi. Some of the most interesting questions asked revolved around how the social challenges are covered in his movies, how and why he limits the use of music during his films, and why most of his movies seem to end without a concrete ending, to which Mr. Farhadi explained that out of respect to his intellectual viewers, he leaves the ending to the viewer to think and close the movie anyway they see fit.
The girls were impressed by how the issue of “judging others and its negative impacts in our daily lives” as well as the key roles of his female characters are so widely regarded in the movies.
Of course the visit wouldn’t end without the opportunity for excited girls, and staff, asking for Mr. Farhadi’s autograph and taking some memorable pictures.
A great big Thank You should also go to Ms. Jaleh Sarshar, as this visit wouldn’t have been possible without her coordination and kindness. Ms. Sarshar was an instructor at OMID holding Film Critic workshops, which have been among the most favorite among our pupils and staff.
At the OMID Foundations we look to offer the girls and young women we support with much more than just the basics of a roof over their head, food and education. It is about building new futures and giving greater opportunities. We would like to thank Ashgar Farhadi for helping the girls and young women look and aim high. It is what they deserve.
About: The Omid Foundations were established to help vulnerable young women in Iran to transform their lives. The center in Tehran takes some of the most vulnerable, abused and neglected girls and works with them to give them the tools they need to lead happy and productive lives.
