The one-week visit, which began on Thursday, was the European Parliament's first visit to Tehran in over five years.

The delegation members and the Iranian official agreed that the visit marks a new beginning in Tehran-EU relations and it would help the two sides to resume their dialogue.

The two sided also underscored the necessity of expanding parliamentary ties between Iran and Europe and called for establishing more contacts based on mutual respect and interests.

Ravanchi said the new government of Hassan Rouhani has adopted a policy of detente aimed at promoting constructive relations with other countries while adhering to the principles and values of the Islamic Revolution.

He also said that both Iran and the European Union should join forces to counter terrorism, which is a common concern to the Middle East region and other corners of the world.

Finnish MEP Tarja Cronberg, who is leading the delegation, said that both the European parliament and the EU fully support the Geneva nuclear deal reached between Iran the major powers.

Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) clinched a deal on November 24 according to which Iran agreed to offer a number of concessions in exchange for limited relief from the sanctions imposed on the country. The agreement is designed to provide time to negotiate a comprehensive deal to help resolve Iran's nuclear issue.
