Report: Iranian Had $70 Million Check

Source: RFE/RL

German authorities have reportedly found a check worth about $70 million in the possession of a former head of Iran's central bank.

Tahmaseb Mazaheri stepped down as Iranian central bank chief in 2008.

German customs officials issued a statement saying a check for 300 million Venezuelan bolivars, issued by the Bank of Venezuela, was found on a 59-year-old man at Dusseldorf airport.

The German "Bild am Sonntag" newspaper identified the man as Tahmasb Mazaheri, who was governor of Iran's central bank until 2008.

The check was reportedly found in Mazaheri's luggage on January 21, following his arrival in Germany aboard a flight from Turkey.

German authorities are reportedly investigating a possible money-laundering operation.
