The children of Iranian Opposition leaders were arrested this morning, according to opposition website Kaleme. It reported that security forces searched their home for several hours and then took them into custody.

The report of their arrest drew an immediate response from the judiciary, which announced that the women had been summoned to the security court to provide certain explanations and would be released after an hour.

The children of Mousavi and Rahnavard have been issuing open letters contesting the house arrest of their parents and challenging their treatment by the authorities as illegal.

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest for close to two years, and the authorities have held them without any formal charges, denying them any contact with the outside world.

The Mousavi children had issued a letter two weeks ago to emphasize that they are deeply concerned about their parents' well being, as they have not been allowed any visits with them in the past two months.

They accused the government of "kidnapping" their parents and called for their immediate release.

Iranian authorities have ignored the outcry against the illegal arrest of these opposition leaders, who are being held without any formal charges being laid against them.

The Karroubi and Mousavi children have repeatedly condemned the treatment of their parents.

Two weeks ago, the daughters of Mousavi and Rahnavard spoke out once again against the house arrest of their parents, saying their situation is no different than a "kidnapping."

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has called on the Islamic Republic authorities to end the "arbitrary" arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Zahra Rahnavard.
