Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Monday called for the expansion of cooperation among the Eurasian countries, saying that Eurasia is an engine of global economic growth.
Salehi made the remarks in a speech during the Islamic Republic of Iran and Eurasian Cooperation Conference, which opened in Tehran on Monday and closes today.
Officials and scholars from a number of countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, and Germany, are attending the conference.
In his speech, Salehi said, "There is no doubt that Eurasia, given its vast potential, is one of the engines of the global economic growth and any development in it influences the international system."
He added, "Meanwhile, Eurasia is grappling with various problems, including terrorism, extremism, illicit drugs, economic and political underdevelopment, ethnic, border, and sectarian conflicts, environmental problems, and political disagreements, which create problems for the stability and security of the region and the world.
"Dealing with these problems and overcoming them requires cooperation, strengthening convergence, and utilizing regional potential properly."
Nikolai Levichev, a member of the Russian State Duma, also delivered a speech during the conference in which he called for the expansion of Eurasian cooperation.
