Saeed Mortazavi, the former Tehran prosecutor, has been indicted on the charge of "complicity in murder" in the death of Mahmmad Kamrani, one of the three detainees who were killed under torture in Kahrizak Prison in 2009.

The Bahar daily wrote in its Wednesday February 27 edition: "According to Slaeh Nikbakht, the lawyer for the Amir Javadifar family, the suit filed by the Javadifar and Ruholamini families is still being processed, but no indictment has been issued for them yet."

An earlier indictment issued by a Tehran court had only charged the three suspects in the Kahrizak case with "colluding in illegal arrests." Prior to that, many sources had mentioned the charge of "complicity in murder" facing Mortazavi.

In 2009, when Saeed Mortazavi was Prosecutor of Tehran, a group of election protesters were sent to Kahrizak Prison, where they were severely tortured and abused. The prison was shut down by the order of Iran's Supreme Leader after it became public that three of the detainees, Mohammad Kamrani, Amir Javadifar and Mohsen Ruholamini, had died under torture.

Besides Mortazavi, Hassan Zareh Dehnavi, also known as Judge Haddad, and AliAkbar Heydarifar, a prosecutor, are also facing charges in the case.

The trial began yesterday behind closed doors. The public expressed disappointment that the judge is keeping the trial behind closed doors after more than three years of delays in delivering justice to the families of the victims.

Etemad reports that Saeed Mortazavi's indictment included "complicity in murder, collusion in illegal arrests, and collusion in preparing false reports."

The father of Mohsen Ruholamini told reporters that he has great confidence in the court's ability to mete out justice to the families of the victims of the Kahrizak tragedy.

The father of Ali Kamrani also described the great pains the families had taken to reinstate the charge of "complicity in murder" against Mortazavi.
