An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked Sirch in Kerman Province on Monday night at 11:23 PM. Mehr news agency reports that the earthquake was long and the shocks were felt in Kerman, the capital of the province.
Emergency officials report that 10 recuse teams have been dispatched to Sirch, but so far there are no reports of fatalities.
Sirch was hit by a deadly earthquake more than 30 years ago, which left 500 dead and thousands homeless.
In 2003, the 6.5 earthquake that killed close to 27,000 people in Bam also occurred in Kerman province.
Iran was also hit with two deadly earthquakes in recent months, which left hundreds dead and thousands wounded. In August, a 6.2 earthquake hit Eastern Azerbaijan province in northeastern Iran, causing more than 300 deaths and 4,500 injuries.
In November, Zahan, in the northeastern province of Southern Khorasan, was also rocked by an earthquake that left eight people dead and injured another 15.
