Italy beat Iran in a five-set match 3-2 at home (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13) Sunday night in a Pool B match in the fourth week of 2013 FIVB World League. In the match held in Sassari, Italy in front of the 4,300 fans, giant Italy exacted revenge on Iran after the world's No.3 lost to the visiting team 3-1 in Modena on Friday.
In the first set, Italy's Ivan Zaytsev recorded 18 points and learned from Friday's errors to secure the court. Italy, coached by Mauro Berruto, coped well with the Iranian attack and won the first two sets by scores of (25-22) and (25-20).
Italy fell behind in the third set, and Iran took control of the moment to win the third set (20-25).
In the fourth set, Iran managed to keep a good lead and won the set (18-25), FIVB wrote.
Italy continued to play harder in the tie-break, with support of the home team fans and finished the match (15-13).
"We had a great opportunity to win this match with Italy, but we did not have the malice necessary to get the victory as happened in Modena. Instead we have undergone the experience of our opponents," said Iran coach Julio Velasco at the post match news conference.
Iran will face Cuba on Saturday.
