Iran closes in on World Cup dream with 4-0 win over Lebanon

Iran reached the brink of qualifying for the World Cup finals after trouncing Lebanon 4-0 in front of about 100,000 fans at Tehran's Azadi Stadium on Tuesday. Iran now has 13 points from seven matches in Group A of Asian qualifying.

 
Highlights of the game

Mohammad Reza Khalatbari opened the scoring with six minutes remaining to the break after some fantastic dribbling in the penalty area.

Iran captain Javad Nekounam extended Iran's lead just before the interval with a header.


Reza Ghuchannejad made it 3-0 one minute into the second half, firing a stunning blast into the roof of Lebanon's net.

In the 86th minute, Javad Nekounam scored a goal from long-range, increasing Iran's lead to 4-0.


Before the Iran-Lebanon match, South Korea defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 on a rainy day in Seoul.

The South Koreans are now at the top of the table with 14 points from seven matches, one point clear of Iran. Uzbekistan is in third with 11 points.

The top two teams in Group A and Group B of Asia qualify for the World Cup directly, while the third-place teams go to a playoff, with the winner facing off against the fifth-place team of South America for a berth in the World Cup.
