Election centres opened their doors at 8 AM local time on Friday June 14 for the presidential and municipal elections. Voting stations numbering 66,000 in Iran and 290 abroad will remain open for 10 hours as 50 million Iranians are said to be eligible to vote in these elections.

Top Islamic Republic officials have already cast their ballots, according to Iranian media.

Ayatollah Khamenei reportedly arrived at the station early and told a reporter that no one has been told of his choice. He urged election officials to guard people's votes in absolute trust.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, the top reformist candidate who was disqualified by the Guardian Council, cast his ballot today and expressed hope that the election outcome would result in national unity.

Other top officials such as parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, judiciary chief Sadegh Larijani and the head of the Guardian Council also cast their ballots, as did all six candidates.

With the exception of Hassan Rohani, the candidates are by and large supported by conservative factions of the establishment.
