Phoenix Suns center Hamed Haddadi has decided to pay tribute to his home country by choosing to wear No. 98, Iran's international telephone code.
He was traded by the Memphis Grizzlies to the Toronto Raptors as part of the Rudy Gay deal in January, and then, less than a month later, in February, he was traded from Toronto to the Phoenix Suns.
According to ESPN's NBA reporter Arash Markazi, the switch was made from his old number 15 as a sort of homage to his native Iran. The number 98 is Iran's international telephone country code.
Haddadi is the only Iranian who has made it to the NBA and made a name for himself by helping Iran's national team win the 2007 and 2009 FIBA Asia championships.
But the 7'2" big man has been used sparingly throughout his career in the NBA. This season, he is averaging 1.2 points in 6.7 minutes per game.
