Iran Launches Indigenous Destroyer In Caspian Sea

Source: Islamic Republic News Agency

The Jamaran-2 destroyer was launched in the Caspian Sea waters Sunday in the northern port city of Bandar Anzali in Gilan province in the presence of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi and Chief of Staff of Iranˈs Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi were also present in the ceremony.

The 1420-ton destroyer is powered by a 20000-horsepower engine with a speed of 30 knots and has the capability to carry helicopters, different surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, advanced artilleries and torpedo system. It is also equipped with electronic war system.

The indigenously-built destroyer has been designed and manufactured by Defense Ministry experts and enjoys state-of-the-art navigation equipment and complex defensive systems.

When final tests are completed, the Jamaran-2 will join Iranˈs Navy fleet.

The destroyer is a symbol of the Islamic Republic's capability and strength and conveys the message of peace and friendship to the Caspian Sea states.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment.

The Iranian Navy launched its first destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf in February 2010. The 1,420-ton vessel is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other states.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. The sea has a surface area of 371,000 km2 and a volume of 78,200 km3. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) and is bounded to the north by Russia, to the south by Iran, western Azerbaijan, and eastern Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. (View Larger Map)

Ahmadinejad: Iranˈs progress serves regional security

In a special ceremony to launch Jamaran 2 destroyer, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iranˈs development and progress serve the security of the Caspian Sea region.

ˈI am quite confident that Caspian Sea littoral states are happy with Iranˈs development and regard it in line with their own security,ˈ he said.

Caspian Sea is the sea of brotherhood, durable security and campaign against extremism and those endangering the security of regional nations, he said.

Iranˈs policy is based on promoting solidarity, friendship and convergence among nations, he said.

On the Westˈs propaganda against Iranˈs peaceful nuclear program, he said the fact is that nuclear science has been indegenized by Iranian scientists and this cannot be wiped out from their minds even in the event Iranian nuclear facilities are bombed.
