Iranian media report that 74 people were killed and 670 injured in road accidents since the New Year began on Thursday March 21. IRNA reports that Eskandar Momeni, the head of traffic police, announced that in the four days since the New Year holidays started, 444 cars have overturned in traffic.
Many Iranians travel during the new year holidays
A spokesman for the Road Transportation organization said yesterday that in the past 24 hours, 347 road accidents have been reported, 198 caused damage, 19 led to a death toll of 25, and 130 led to injuries for 221 people.
The largest number of deaths from road accidents is reported in the northern province of Mazandaran, a popular destination for the New Year holidays.
Road accidents are the second biggest cause of death in Iran, with about 66 people dying in road crashes every day.
