Aspiring to be the premier center for the study and appreciation of Persian culture in the United States, the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies was established at UMD's School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in Fall 2004.
The Institute currently offers a major and a minor in Persian studies and boasts a Language House Immersion Program and a number of named endowments:
The Roshan Institute's upcoming events include a speaker series named after Professor Ehsan Yarshater in March 2013. The distinguished professor of Persian Sufi literature, Professor Carl Ernst, of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill will deliver a series of lectures focusing on Persian literature produced on the Indian subcontinent. The Institute will also hold a Persian Film Festival in April, highlighting films recently made by the Iranian youth.
