Following unofficial statements regarding a possible delay in the presidential election, Iran's Supreme Leader announced that the election will go on as planned and no one will be allowed to delay it.

Ayatollah Khamenei

In a meeting with administrators of the presidential election on Monday May 6, Ayatollah Khamenei said: "Many have tried to diminish the elections throughout the years or delay it, but they have never succeeded and, with God's support, they will not succeed in the future either."

He said that as long as the rule of law holds firm and all demands are responded to in accordance with the law, all will be well.

Some conservative factions have expressed concern that the Ahmadinejad administration may sabotage the election process. Rumours have been circulated that if Ahmadinejad's desired candidate is rejected by the Guardian Council, he might attempt to interfere with the election process.

All candidates must be approved by the Guardian Council before they can run a campaign.

Iran's 11th presidential election will take place on June 14, 2013, and the registration of nominees is set to commence tomorrow, May 7.
