The largest gold processing plant in Iran will be inaugurated by the end of the next Iranian calendar month of Azar (December 21). The Zarshouran plant will be established in West Azarbaijan province, northwest of Iran.
Zarshouran will produce 3 tons of gold ingots, 1.25 tons of silver ingots, and 500 kilograms of mercury per year, the Mehr News Agency quoted the project manager Hosseinqoli Qavanlou as saying on Sunday.
The project will create some 2,600 direct and indirect jobs, he added.
Some 834 billion rials plus€15.2 million has been invested in the project. The Zarshouran gold mine holds 110 tons of proven reserve.
In May, the Geological Survey of Iran deputy director announced that the volume of Iran's gold reserves is estimated to be over 340 tons.
There are 15 gold mines in the country and extraction will be started in two other mines in the current Iranian calendar year, which started on March 21, IRNA quoted Behrouz Borna as saying.
Iran ranks 12th in Asia and 42nd in the world in terms of gold reserves, Borna stated.
He added that the country's annual gold production is projected to hit 10 tons this year.
Last year, Fars news agency quoted Borna as saying that Iran has about 68 kinds of minerals, and 20 other types of minerals had been identified through recent explorations.
