Iran opened the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Grand Champions Cup with a 3-1 loss (25-16, 25-17, 25-27, 25-23) to Brazil in Kyoto, Japan on Tuesday.

In the match held at the Kyoto Prefectural Gymnasium, the Wallace De Souza was the best scorer for Brazil with a tally of 19 points. For Iran, it was Amir Ghafour leading the way with 15 points.

Elsewhere, Italy defeated reigning Olympic champions in four sets (28-26, 25-20, 19-25, and 27-25) and the U.S. beat host Japan 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20).

"I want to congratulate Brazil on their very good match. I show Brazil to my team many times to show them how to play good volleyball, so to go up against them was not easy in the beginning," Iran coach Julio Velasco said in the post-match news conference.

"Brazil played very good tactics and defense against our attack. They caused our players to attack balls that they don't want to attack. And I think our players suffered a lot because of this, not just technically but mentally also. I think in this match our players learned a lot for the future," he added.

The championships has brought six teams Japan (host), Iran (2013 Asian Champion), the U.S. (2013 NORCECA Champion), Brazil ( 2013 South American Champion), Russia (2013 European Champion) and Italy (Wild Card) together.
