Iran overpowered Japan in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) in the final match of the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup on Sunday at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The result gave Iran a 3-2 mark, while Japan finished winless at 0-5, FIVB wrote.
Hamzeh Zarini and Shahram Mahmoudi led Iran with 16 points each.
Tatsuya Fukuzawa was the top scorer for Japan with nine points. Kunihiro Shimizu added eight in the loss.
Brazil won gold medal of the tournament after beating Italy 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, and 15-11), followed by Russia, Italy, Iran, the U.S. and host Japan.
"We created several problems for them with our serves. We blocked well. Our setters played good. Our confidence was high for this match. It is our first time to play in such a high-level tournament. I am very proud of our players. All of Iran is proud of them," Ian coach Julio Velasco said in the post match news conference.
