New Iranian deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance for cultural affairs said that culture cannot develop in a darkroom or a greenhouse environment. "Creativities and talents are not developed in a closed cultural environment," Seyyed Abbas Salehi said during a meeting the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance held in Tehran on Tuesday to introduce him.

"Culture cannot be grown in a darkroom; culture also cannot be raised in a greenhouse environment. It needs an open environment and a fresh gentle breeze," he added.

The office of the deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance for cultural affairs has the task of supervising the content of books before publication and activities of the cultural centers.

Iranian authors must obtain approval of the office for publication of their works.

The office assumed a strict control of publications over the past eight years. As a result, works by many Iranian writers were not authorized.

The minister of culture and Islamic guidance, who attended the meeting, criticized former executives of the office for the strict control.

"I think if the Holy Quran was not a divine revelation and we sent it to the office, they would refuse to authorize its publication," Ali Jannati said.
