‘The unwanted son’ tells you about the lives of three strong and independent women and their struggle to make a better life in turbulent Iran. It’s about breaking taboos within an Islamic regime that tries to regulate the private lives of the people in that country. It’s about homosexuality, as the biggest taboo in Iran, and its impact on family life and that of friends. It’s about love, hope and dreams that exist in any other society. It’s about the ‘Green movement’ in 2009. It’s not strictly a political novel, but the lives of Iranians are inevitably intertwined with politics, so that you can’t write a book about Iran without entering into politics.
I wrote this novel in Dutch. Many readers found that it was a book that should be read by many more people for the humanitarian message it contains. So, I have decided to translate it into English.
