36th Caspian Sea Legal Regime confab kicked off in Ashgabat

Dushanbe, April 1, Islamic Republic News Agency - The 36the Caspian Sea Legal Regime regional confab kicked off in Ashgabat on Tuesday hosting representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Deputy Foreign Minister for the Asia-Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour leads the Iranian delegation in the confab.


The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. The sea has a surface area of 371,000 km2 and a volume of 78,200 km3. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) and is bounded to the north by Russia, to the south by Iran, western Azerbaijan, and eastern Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.


The deputy foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan are to discuss the latest developments on the legal regime and will prepare a report for the upcoming ministerial meeting, due to be held in Russia.

The Caspian Sea Convention will determine the territorial rights of littoral states- Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan - as well as other matters related to the world's largest landlocked body of water.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in a message sent to the confab said the issue of Caspian Sea is on the agenda of the countryˈs foreign policy which is based on good-neighboring, mutual respect and equal rights in making use of this natural resource.
