HRANA reports that in a joint letter, the two men have written that in protest against the "punishment of families of political prisoners, including threats, summonses to the Ministry of Intelligence, arrests, interrogations and the psychological torture of their family members as well as the exile of prisoners...", they are going on a hunger strike.

Mehralibeglo was arrested in early 2013 with four other activists in Azerbaijan province and sentenced to nine years in jail.

Arash Mohammadi, a student activist, was arrested last June in Tabriz and is serving a one-year sentence.
