Iranian national team captain Javad Nekounam has signed a two-year contract with second division side Osasuna, returning to the Spanish club after a two-year spell in the Middle East.
Nekounam was presented as Osasuna's new signing in front of more than 400 fans at the El Sadar stadium on Monday.
The former Esteghlal player rejected better financial offers from Qatari and Iranian clubs to join Osasuna, according to the club's technical director, Javier Zabaleta.
After the presentation ceremony, Nekounam attended a press conference to answer questions by the media.
"I am very happy to wear the Osasuna jersey again. I'm so happy to come back home. I followed everything about Osasuna over the past two years. My heart was beating for this team," Nekounam told reporters.
"I saw the game against Betis that resulted in the relegation to the second division. It was very sad because when you are off the team and you can't help, it's more disappointing. But we will work hard this season to gain promotion back to La Liga," he stated.
"I didn't come here for money because I had a very good offer from Qatar and an offer from a La Liga side, but I turned them down to join Osasuna. I hope we return to the first division at the end of the season," he said in reply to a question about his other offers.
Nekounam began his career with Pas in 1998, and then he spent some years in the United Arab Emirates. He joined Osasuna in 2006 and spent six years in Pamplona, scoring 26 goals in 157 appearances for Los Rojillos.
